Merzouga Weather by Month

Merzouga weather month by month from the two nearest official stations, Errachidia and Ouarzazate: daytime highs, cold desert nights in winter, rain, and the mild seasons.

Updated November 2026

Spring and autumn are the mild seasons on the road to Merzouga. At Errachidia, the nearest station with official climate normals, the average daily high is 26.8 °C in October and 26.1 °C in April, against 39.5 °C in July; in January the average nightly low is 2.0 °C. Those figures are for Errachidia, about 100 km from the dunes in a straight line, and for Ouarzazate on the Marrakech road; they are not Merzouga’s own figures. So book October, November, March or April for mild days, and take warm layers for the camp night from November to March.

Errachidia, the station whose normals are printed here, stands on the road from Fes to Merzouga; the road from Marrakech crosses the High Atlas at the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Distances by road.

Errachidia climate normals 1991-2020, Direction de la Météorologie Nationale, published by the World Meteorological Organization’s World Weather Information Service (checked November 2026). Errachidia is on the Fes road, about 100 km from Merzouga in a straight line; these are its figures, not readings in the dunes.

Errachidia is the nearest station with official normals, on the road the trips from Fes take. Its year runs from mild winter days with near-freezing nights to summer days close to 40 °C, with little rain in any month. October is its wettest month by a small margin, at 23.7 mm.

Ouarzazate climate normals 1991-2020, Direction de la Météorologie Nationale, published by the World Meteorological Organization (checked November 2026). Ouarzazate is a town on the road from Marrakech, not the pass over the High Atlas.

Ouarzazate tells you about the first day of the trip from Marrakech, which passes the town after crossing the High Atlas. Its daytime highs run within 1.5 °C of Errachidia’s in every month, and its summer nights are a few degrees cooler. The pass itself, Tizi n’Tichka, has no figures here, and it can close in winter: on 20 January 2026 it was shut by snow and rockfall while road crews cleared it, with a reopening expected the same day (Hespress).

What it means for the trip

Illustration: early morning in high orange sand dunes under a pale clear sky, two travellers in warm jackets and scarves sitting on a dune crest and looking east as the sun rises, a camel resting below
Illustration. Sunrise on a winter morning in the dunes, the coldest hour of the camp night.

The camp night spans the two ends of the day: you ride in before sunset and out after sunrise, so you spend the coldest hours in or by the tent. From November to February, at both stations, the average nightly low is under 8 °C, and from December to February under 5 °C. Bring warm layers for the night. From June to August the days average 35 °C or more at both stations, and the drive is long and hot.

So the mild seasons are spring and autumn: October and April have days in the mid-20s and nights in the low to mid-teens. November and March are cooler by day and colder at night, still good months for the trip with a warm layer. In winter, heavy rain can cause flash flooding, particularly in the mountains or near rivers, and mountain roads can be especially hazardous in poor weather (UK government travel advice for Morocco): is Merzouga safe has more.

For a cool-season booking, Ando Travel Ltd’s Option 1, in the calendar above, is the default; its free cancellation up to 24 hours before leaves room for a change in the weather.
