Two routes from the same dunes
Both kinds of trip spend the first two days the same way: over the High Atlas from Marrakech, by Ait Benhaddou and the gorges, to a camp night in the Erg Chebbi dune field. Day 3 is where they part. The round trip turns back west and drives the 553 km to Marrakech. The one-way trip heads north, 461 km by road to Fes, by Erfoud and the Ziz Valley, then over the Middle Atlas through its cedar forest and Ifrane. Added up, the one-way trip covers about 1,014 km by road against 1,106 km for the round trip, and you see a second mountain range instead of the first one again.

When the one-way trip is the better buy
If Fes is on your route anyway, the one-way trip is the better buy: it costs about the same, it does not repeat the High Atlas road on day 3, and it delivers you to the next city. The catch is your onward ticket. Marrakech City Life SARL’s trip warns that the long hours of driving may not suit travellers with back problems or motion sickness, and that holds for every trip on this route, one way or round.
Two things to check before you book a one-way trip. First, where you are dropped: MOROCCO TRIP takes you to your Fes hotel or riad, or to a meeting point within five minutes on foot where a car cannot reach it, and Marrakech City Life SARL includes a hotel drop-off in Fes. Second, the camp: on MOROCCO TRIP’s standard option the bathrooms are shared, and its Deluxe tent, with a private shower and toilet, was US$202 on 12 November. Quad biking costs extra on both trips outside their dearest options, and on MOROCCO TRIP’s buggy rides cost extra in every option.
When the round trip wins
If you are flying home from Marrakech, or have left a riad booked there, the round trip is the one to take: a one-way trip would leave you in Fes with a long journey back.
